From Lead Counsel: October 2021
Hi everyone, I hope you had a great summer and are looking forward to a spectacular fall! The team here at Vogelzang Law is working harder than ever. As is often the case, witnesses, clients and lawyers are all hard to nail down in the midst of a beautiful Chicago summer, and trial dates often get set in September and October. This year has been no exception as we make our way through settlements of several mesothelioma and lung cancer cases set for this fall. The great news is that we were able to pick a jury live and in-person during the last week of September. This is the first time since March of 2020 that the court allowed us to work with jurors and potentially try a case. Luckily, we were able to reach a settlement for our very deserving client and find closure for the family on the eve of opening arguments. With that case wrapped up, we are continuing to move through our docket and work with our many clients to get their cases taken care of. With our newfound ability to work with the court and jurors, it offers a much needed sense of urgency and allows for lingering settlements to be executed. Although COVID is still with us, it is more than promising to know that the court system is finding its way.
While the lawyers and paralegals have been working nonstop on all of the cases we have coming up, Mirela and Maddie, our duo in the field, have been back at it with golf outings and fundraising events. First and foremost, they wrapped up our fourth annual Mesothelioma Race for Justice or MRFJ as we affectionately call it. We had over 100 runners and raised upwards of $12,000 for the Meso Foundation, which provides funding to doctors to continue their research to stop mesothelioma. The race was a huge success! Similar to last year, the race was virtual. This format allowed people from around the country to participate. We hope to host a combination of virtual and in-person events next year to raise even more money!
In addition to our annual race, this month, we hosted the first annual Vogelzang Law Golf Outing to raise money for the Breath of Life foundation! The event was such a success raising over $8,000 for the Breath of Life foundation and the Lung Cancer Research Foundation. The Breath of Life foundation was founded with the intent to assist families in Wisconsin in fighting their battle with Cystic Fibrosis. The Lung Cancer Research Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on supporting lung cancer research. With 84 hackers, duffers, pros and amateurs swinging away and enjoying the fall weather all while raising awareness for asbestos victims and fellowshiping with our friends and colleagues, it was a fantastic day to say the least.
I hope this update gives you a small window into all that we do each day at the firm. Some days can feel overwhelming and rocky, while others feel much more gentle and fun. I am grateful for our Vogelzang Law team. Together, we are accomplishing our goals and moving forward. If you would like to get involved in any of our charitable work or if you have legal questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us on social or through email. Our passion for what we do is contagious and inspiring. I look forward to seeing and talking to many of you very soon.
