Gearing Up for the Mesothelioma Race for Justice 2020

The third annual Mesothelioma Race for Justice 5K will take place this year on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020. The eagerly awaited race will serve as a tribute to National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. The event will raise money for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF).

MARF is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit foundations dedicated to eradicating the life-ending effects of mesothelioma and was founded in 1999 by former Executive Director, Christopher Hahn. The organization, also known as the Meso Foundation, is comprised of a network of patients, families, physicians, advocates, and researchers, who have been instrumental in awarding over $10.2 million to global projects.

“MARF is the main foundation that I have worked with the most over the years,” Mirela Kopier, race director, said. “The organization does so much for mesothelioma affected families – from hosting support groups for both caretakers and patients, to producing informational and educational mesothelioma content, to funding research for new treatment.”

Proceeds from the first annual Mesothelioma Race for Justice in 2018 exceeded $6,300. The following year, the amount doubled to over $15,000. This year, Kopier is hoping to continue the momentum by raising $20,000.

“My goal was to double from the first year, which I did, so this year’s goal is $20,000,” Kopier said.

This will be Kopier’s third time directing the race. What began as a fun, new way to raise money for a worthy cause, has become an annual staple for Vogelzang Law. Kopier has witnessed first-hand the evolution of the race since its beginning in 2018. It is something she looks forward to planning every year.

“The first year that I did this, two years ago, was the first year that I coordinated and really put an entire 5K together,” Kopier said. “It was amazing to see the end product and to see people have such a good time and be so supportive. When I handed over that check to the CEO of MARF, it was by far the best moment in my career.”
