The story of Vogelzang Law began 40 years ago at the University of Chicago in 1984. Dr. Nicholas Vogelzang was a young, bright oncologist, who was given some of the most challenging patients – those diagnosed with mesothelioma who worked in the steel mills on the south side of Chicago. Mesothelioma was misunderstood and under-researched, and it needed a young and ambitious doctor to take it on.
In those early years, Dr. Vogelzang would take his son, Nicholas Jr., and his two younger brothers, on Saturday rounds to see cancer patients, to better understand what his father did. Nicholas Jr. was able to witness first hand the bedside manner of his father treating mesothelioma patients.
Several years later in 2003, Dr. Vogelzang made a revolutionary breakthrough for mesothelioma patients worldwide when he created the first life-extending chemotherapy regimen for mesothelioma patients. A combination of pemetrexed and cisplatin gave patients more time with their loved ones and eased some of their pain.
Visiting his father’s mesothelioma patients profoundly affected Nicholas Jr. After he graduated law school, Nicholas began representing those same steel mill patients his father had treated. 20 years later, Vogelzang Law continues fighting and advocating for mesothelioma victims.
Vogelzang Law was founded in 2016 with the goal of mentoring and teaching young attorneys the right way to litigate mesothelioma cases. Mesothelioma patients and their families are suffering a devastating health crisis through no fault of their own. All of the attorneys have been taught the same bedside manner originally taught by Dr. Vogelzang – each patient is a person, not a diagnosis; they deserve justice and dignity.
From his experience and relationships with mesothelioma patients, Nicholas knew there was more to his firm than representation and litigation. Vogelzang Law is active in the cancer community and contributes to research, education, and support.
“For my father, research and finding a cure for cancer was his number one priority. He gave everything he could. He was a founding board member of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation and helped found the Kidney Cancer Association. I am proud and honored to honor his legacy with the Mesothelioma Race for Justice 5K and our work with hospitals to find new ways to extend life for mesothelioma patients even more. Our entire firm is dedicated to serving clients with asbestos-related diseases. That’s at our core and drives us to fight for accountability and justice”
-Nicholas Vogelzang
